In a surprising turn of events, Wildlight Entertainment, the creative team behind the game Highguard, has announced significant layoffs. This news was shared by Alex Graner, a senior level designer, via his LinkedIn account, where he disclosed that he, along with a large portion of the Wildlight team, lost their jobs on February 11.
Graner expressed disappointment over the situation, mentioning that they had developed a wealth of unreleased material for the game that he was eager to unveil to gamers.
The Bumpy Journey of Highguard
Highguard made its debut on January 26 and initially faced a wave of criticism, receiving predominantly unfavorable reviews on Steam shortly after its release. Despite this rocky start, the development team continued to roll out updates aimed at improving the player experience, introducing new gameplay modes and events. However, just weeks after the game's launch, reports emerged regarding the extensive layoffs affecting the studio.
The anticipation surrounding Highguard was palpable, especially since it was featured prominently as one of the final announcements during the 2025 Game Awards ceremony. Yet, following that event, fans experienced a frustrating silence until the game finally became available.
A Growing Trend of Layoffs in the Gaming Industry
Regrettably, this trend of mass layoffs is not isolated to Wildlight alone. The gaming industry has seen similar upheavals recently, with Ubisoft announcing major restructuring plans that resulted in the cancellation of several projects, including the much-anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Additionally, developers at Wildgate and Riot Games have also confirmed layoffs, signaling a broader pattern of instability within the sector.
Insider Gaming has reached out to Wildlight for further comments on this situation and promises to provide updates as more information comes to light.
