Steelers’ 2026 NFL Draft: PFF’s Ideal 3-Round Haul Breakdown | Lemon, Ponds, Nussmeier & More! (2026)

Get ready for an exciting draft season, Steelers fans! The 2026 NFL Draft is a golden opportunity for the Pittsburgh Steelers to bring in some fresh, high-caliber talent and address some critical needs on the roster. With an aging team, the draft is a chance to inject some youth and energy into key positions.

The Steelers have some major gaps to fill, particularly at quarterback, wide receiver, and cornerback. Luckily, they have five picks in the top 100, which is a fantastic starting point. GM Omar Khan has options, including potentially trading up to secure top talent, but the team's current position is already a great advantage.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) has an intriguing vision for the Steelers' draft haul. In their exercise, Pittsburgh lands some impressive players: USC wide receiver Makai Lemon, Indiana cornerback D'Angelo Ponds, Georgia Tech guard Keylan Rutledge, Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

PFF's Bradley Locker writes, "With five picks inside the top 99, the Steelers are in a prime position to trade up in the first round if they wish. Lemon would be an excellent addition as an inside target, complementing DK Metcalf on the outside. If they stay put at 21, Jordyn Tyson or Omar Cooper Jr. could be great fits."

But here's where it gets interesting... PFF suggests the Steelers could also address their cornerback depth in the second round, with Ponds being a potential sparkplug in the slot. With three third-round picks, the focus should be on strengthening positions like guard, linebacker, and quarterback, which are weaker areas for the team both now and in the future.

Rutledge, with his impressive overall PFF grade of 76.7, could step into the role of Isaac Seumalo if he leaves. Rodriguez would provide depth and a powerful presence behind Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson. And Nussmeier, once considered a first-round talent, could be a risky but rewarding pick-up after a challenging 2025 season.

Landing these five players would be a significant achievement for the Steelers. Lemon would be a fantastic addition to the receiving corps, providing a great partnership with DK Metcalf. Ponds, a physical cornerback, would bring a new dimension to the defense, playing bigger than his size.

Our very own Devin Jackson ranks Lemon as the third-best receiver in the class and the 18th overall prospect. Ponds, meanwhile, is ranked 36th overall, and his impressive run with the Hoosiers could see him rise up draft boards early on Day 2.

But here's the part most people miss: the real value could be in the later picks. Nussmeier, with his connection to new head coach Mike McCarthy through his father, Doug, could be a smart move. Despite a tough 2025, he has the potential to develop into a solid quarterback. Rutledge and Rodriguez also offer depth and versatility, addressing multiple needs across the team.

If the Steelers can secure this group of players in the first three rounds, it would lay the foundation for an exceptional draft class under Khan. It's an ambitious haul, but with the right strategy and a bit of luck, the Steelers could transform their roster and set themselves up for success in the coming seasons.

What do you think, Steelers fans? Do you agree with PFF's ideal haul? Who would you like to see the Steelers draft, and why? Let's discuss in the comments and share our draft dreams!
