Lok Sabha Chaos: Opposition Protests Paralyze Indian Parliament (2026)

The Indian Parliament was in chaos on Friday, with the Lok Sabha proceedings coming to a standstill due to intense protests by the Opposition. This disruption led to a complete halt in business, with no progress made after a series of quick adjournments.

The day began with Speaker Om Birla adjourning the House within minutes of its 11 am convening, as Opposition members stormed the well of the House, brandishing banners and posters. The protests showed no signs of abating even after the House reconvened, with Opposition members vocalizing their dissent against the Central government over the military tensions between India and China in Ladakh.

Amidst the chaos, TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti, who was presiding over the proceedings, allowed ministers to table papers. However, with the uproar continuing, he was forced to adjourn the House for the day.

In a separate protest, Opposition MPs gathered at the main entrance of the Parliament building, holding a banner that labeled the India-US trade agreement as a "trap deal." Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra joined the protest, with MPs chanting slogans like "jo uchit samjho, wahi karo" and "tanashahi nahi chalegi," criticizing the Central government's actions.

The sloganeering was a response to Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi's remarks in the Rajya Sabha, where he echoed the sentiment of "jo uchit samjho, wahi karo."

The Opposition's protests have been ongoing since February 2, triggered by an incident where Rahul Gandhi was prevented from quoting excerpts from the memoir of former Army Chief General MM Naravane, published in a news magazine. Speaker Om Birla intervened, citing rules 349 and 353, which prevented Gandhi from reading the excerpts.

This incident has sparked a heated debate, with the Opposition questioning the government's handling of sensitive issues and the interpretation of parliamentary rules. It remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether it will lead to any significant changes in the parliamentary proceedings.

What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think the Opposition's actions are justified, or is this an overreaction? Feel free to share your opinions in the comments below!
