Amidst the escalating Nipah virus outbreak in India, authorities are scrambling to contain the spread. Five cases have been confirmed, and nearly 100 individuals are under quarantine in the eastern state of West Bengal. The situation has prompted Thailand to take proactive measures. The Thai Ministry of Public Health initiated passenger screenings at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, specifically targeting travelers from West Bengal. This decision comes as a precautionary step to prevent potential virus transmission.
The ministry's proactive approach includes the distribution of 'Health Beware Cards' to arriving travelers. These cards provide essential information and guidelines. They advise individuals to seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, difficulty breathing, drowsiness, confusion, or seizures. Notably, these symptoms should be reported, especially if the individual has had contact with bats, sick animals, or an infected person within the 21 days preceding their arrival in Thailand.
In Nepal, the Government has also heightened nationwide alertness to prevent the potential entry of the Nipah virus. This decision was influenced by the recent spread of the virus in West Bengal, a neighboring state of India. Prakash Budhathoki, a spokesperson for the Nepal Ministry of Health and Population, assured that adequate preventive measures are in place. Health screenings have been initiated for passengers arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport and major border points with India. The government has intensified surveillance, particularly at border points in Koshi Province, to ensure early detection and containment.
The Nipah virus, a member of the Henipavirus genus, poses a significant public health threat due to its epidemic potential. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nipah virus is classified as a priority pathogen. Unfortunately, there are no vaccines or treatments available for this virus. It can cause a range of clinical presentations, from asymptomatic infection to acute respiratory infection and fatal encephalitis. The virus is primarily carried by fruit bats of the Pteropus species, creating a constant risk of spillover to humans through contaminated food or direct contact. With no approved vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, and fatality rates ranging from 40% to 75% in past outbreaks, Nipah remains a serious concern wherever it emerges.
