A Stunning Upset: Calum Hill Shatters Records to Take Commanding Lead at the Bahrain Championship!

Get ready for some incredible golf action! At the halfway point of the Bahrain Championship, the leaderboard has been dramatically reshaped, with Calum Hill from Scotland delivering a performance for the ages. He didn't just take the lead; he equalled the Royal Club's course record with an astonishing 11-under-par 61 in the second round. This remarkable feat has propelled him to a four-shot advantage, leaving the competition scrambling to catch up.

The Leaderboard at a Glance:

  • -16: C. Hill (Sco)
  • -12: F. Schott (Ger)
  • -9: U. Coussaud (Fra)

Selected others include:
* -8: B. Stone (SA), A. Pavan (Ita), S. Garcia (Spa)
* -7: G. Forrest (Sco)
* -6: P. Reed (USA)
* +1: P. Harrington (Ire)

(Please note: Five players are still to complete their second rounds.)

How Hill Achieved This Masterpiece:

Calum Hill, a 24-year-old seeking his third DP World Tour title, demonstrated exceptional skill and nerve. He made an incredible 11 birdies to match the existing course record, which was previously set by Brandon Robinson Thompson in the first round of the 2025 tournament. This stellar performance places him at 16 under par overall.

His closest competitor, first-round leader Freddy Schott of Germany, is now 12 under par after adding a 67 to his opening 65. Schott finds himself three shots behind the surging Scotsman, with Frenchman Ugo Coussaud in third place at 9 under par.

A Round to Remember:

Hill himself described the experience with palpable excitement: "I started off really well then had a few bonus putts from really long range go in and I just kept making birdies." He even admitted to being aware of the course record, stating, "I knew the course record was 11 under, so I knew I needed to hole my last shot [to break it] and it looked very good in the air. I thought it had a chance."

His round was a masterclass in consistent scoring. He opened with a birdie, then strung together three consecutive birdies from the fourth hole, bringing him level with Schott. Further birdies at the ninth and 10th holes saw him reach 11 under par. His precision was on full display with outstanding approach shots leading to more birdies at the 13th and 14th.

After a par at the 15th, Hill finished his round in spectacular fashion, sinking three consecutive birdies. This strong finish, combined with dropped shots by Schott at the 15th and 18th, has gifted Hill a handsome lead heading into the weekend.

But here's where it gets interesting...

Ugo Coussaud also finished strong with birdie-birdie to secure third place on his own. Meanwhile, Patrick Reed, the champion from Dubai last week, is currently at 6 under par.

The question on everyone's mind: Can Calum Hill maintain this incredible momentum and secure his third DP World Tour title? Or will Schott, Coussaud, or one of the other talented players on 8 under par, including former Masters champion Sergio Garcia, mount a charge that will make for an unforgettable final two rounds?

What do you think? Is this lead insurmountable, or is the Bahrain Championship still wide open? Let us know your predictions in the comments below – we'd love to hear your thoughts!
