Alberta Separatist Movement Faces Resistance: Uncovering the Battle for Independence (2026)

Alberta's Separatist Struggles: A Cross-Canada Effort to Suppress Independence Ambitions

Alberta's Separatist Leader, Mitch Sylvestre, is facing a coordinated national campaign to hinder his province's quest for independence. Sylvestre, the CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), claims that at least 25 meetings planned for his pro-sovereignty movement and the APP-sponsored Alberta First Pension Plan initiative have been canceled due to pressure from sovereignty opponents across the country.

In an interview with the Albertan, Sylvestre revealed that the cancellations are part of a deliberate strategy to make it difficult for his group to operate. He stated, 'This is a very organized thing. They do this on purpose to make it hard for us.' Despite the challenges, Sylvestre remains determined, emphasizing that grassroots politics cannot be controlled, and his movement will persist.

Since receiving authorization from Elections Alberta in early January to begin collecting signatures for their petition drive, separatists have encountered numerous obstacles in securing meeting venues. Sylvestre highlights the significant financial stakes involved, suggesting that those opposing Alberta's independence have substantial resources to lose.

The referendum question put forward by Sylvestre asks eligible Albertans, 'Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?' To legally proceed to the referendum phase, separatists must gather at least 177,732 valid signatures from eligible Alberta voters within 120 days, by May 2.

However, the group Stay Free Alberta has faced setbacks, including canceled meetings at the Castor Legion Hall and the Fleet Hall. The Royal Canadian Legion's local branch, #104, managed by Wally Genz, has refused to host or support any meetings or petition activities for Stay Free Alberta, citing the Legion's national policy of political neutrality. Genz explained, 'Out of respect for that service, the Royal Canadian Legion, especially Branch 104, remains focused on remembrance, veteran support, and community service, not political activity.'

Canadian Brewhouse in Edmonton also canceled a separatist gathering scheduled for January 12, citing the use of their name and location without authorization. Despite these rejections, Sylvestre remains steadfast, stating, 'We just keep trying until we get a 'yes.' We have people looking into that. We have certain places that you know that that won't host us and told us clearly that they won't host us, so we just move to a different place.'

Meanwhile, pro-Canada forces in the province are gearing up for what they anticipate will be a referendum call by the provincial government this fall. Thomas Lukaszuk, leader of the Forever Canada petition movement, has recognized thousands of volunteers and is preparing for the upcoming referendum campaign, which he describes as one of the largest in the province's history. Lukaszuk emphasizes the need for a well-organized and funded campaign to counter the separatists' efforts.
